Grief, Illness, and Loss…
As covid-19 and the ravages of racial injustice spread like a stain across our land,
…many of us are experiencing different levels of loss, grief, sadness, and yes, even despair.
On the Personal Level, have you lived through any of the following?
• A dying parent
• A debilitating illness
• Caretaking a loved one
• Going through a divorce
• Going through a family tragedy
• Experiencing two or more of the above?
…and found that you stopped making art, or significantly reduced the time and attention you gave it?
On our Collective Level, as social creatures, are you experiencing any of the following?
• More exhaustion than usual
• More stress than usual for every-day, domestic chores (shopping, going to the post office, needing to find something, etc.)
• Heightened sensitivity to our collective, national grief for so many dying and dead, so many working their hearts out for the rest of us, so many agonizingly hungry?
At some level all of America is suffering as humanity struggles in the middle of this difficult time on planet Earth.
Yet… please take heart.

In this written, self-study presentation+ handout (transcribed from the original smARTist Telesummit audio version, which you can download to read or print out), Dr. Cuellar gives you a unique, step-by-step process to keep creative resilience strong by using your art to illuminate any painful time.
I wish that I had known—back when my parents died,
I lost my job teaching, and my marriage broke up—
about what you presented today, because it would have
helped a lot.It was a lengthy period and I didn’t create anything
because I was so down and I just felt so defeated.I hope anybody who is going through this kind of thing
now, today, will try to use what you’re presenting,
because I think it would be really helpful. ~ Karen,
smARTist Presentation participant
